Haapamäki Church

Haapamäki Church is one of the first multi-purpose churches. Adjacent to the church hall are a parish hall and club rooms.

About this place

With the completion of the Jyväskylä railway line (1897), Haapamäki had developed into a major railway junction. As the population grew, it was deemed necessary to establish a prayer hall and a cemetery.

In 1931, railway foreman Heikki Heinonen and his wife Emma donated a plot of good-quality arable land behind the railway yard for this purpose. The plans for the church were commissioned from master builder Heikki Tiitola.

The foundations of the church were laid in 1939 on ‘donated land’, where a modest chapel had stood since 1932. However, the war brought the plans for the chapel to a halt, and the foundations were overgrown with bushes after the war.

The church was eventually built in Haapamäki according to new plans drawn up by architect Mikael Nordenswan, who had attended school there. Nordenswan designed a long church with a steeply pitched roof and a brick structure, whose plastered exterior is enlivened by slate tiles. A separate, tall bell tower stands next to the main entrance.

The chancel is lower than the rest of the church, and the chancel wall features a simple cross.
