Old Keuruu
An area of cultural, historical and scenic value in the heart of Keuruu!
Traditions – art – food – shopping
A unique 19th-century vicarage setting stretches along the shores of Lake Keurusselkä. The Keuruu Museum, with its exhibitions, is located in Kamana, the former stone ba of the vicarage. In the vicinity of the churches, you will find cafés and shops, amongst other amenities. The exhibitions at Punnosen House and the library offer artistic experiences.
Maria Raunion’s trail leads to the cultural harbour being built on the library’s waterfront. You can immerse yourself in local traditions at the Keuruu Local History Museum, or why not book Kaisa, the local guide, to show you around the church? Because even Kaisa knows: Old Keuruu is full of stories.
The area has developed around Keuruu’s old wooden church, which was completed in 1758. Keuruu’s new brick church was completed in 1892.
On the town centre side of the 120-year-old railway line that runs through the area, you’ll find Keuruu railway station (open this summer by arrangement), the Keuruu Local History Museum and Punnosen talo with its exhibitions, as well as cafés and shops, including the quirky second-hand shop Antiikkirenki. Locally known as ‘Mäkisen rannassa’, this is where Keuruu’s main library is situated. The Kamana Tourist Centre and its courtyard ba s are on the other side of the railway line. Together, they form a unique 19th-century vicarage setting on the shores of Lake Keurusselkä. Kivinavetta Kamana is a magnificently restored old stone ba (1903) belonging to the vicarage, which houses the Keuruu Museum, open all year round.
The Keuruu Museum hosts changing exhibitions throughout the year.
A new venue, the Indie Art Gallery, is located in the centre of Keuruu (opening 7 June 2025). If you fancy a coffee or a savoury snack, pop into one of our cosy cafés. Café Iidan Unelma is located in the red-timbered “Marttamökki”, where you can enjoy delicious cakes, buns and sandwich cakes in a cosy atmosphere. Almost opposite is P & T Street Cafe, where you can enjoy coffee with fresh buns, doughnuts and savoury pies. On Tuesdays, we bake wholemeal rye bread using sourdough, and on Wednesdays, we make keto products. These homemade gluten-free and keto products are available frozen every day. You can buy treats to take away from both cafés, and they make products to order.
Why not explore the Old Keuruu area at a leisurely pace on foot?
Why not combine your visit to the Old Keuruu area with a cruise on a genuine paddle steamer? It’s about a 300-metre walk from the old stone ba to Ahtola harbour.
