The Wilderness Church at Pihlajavesi
The church was built in 1780 using resources from ten houses and four crofts. Matti Åkerblom acted as the architect and builder.
Information about this attraction
The long church with its west tower and cross-barred side aisles mysteriously rose into place some seventy years before the first road was built in the district.
Nestled in the heart of the forest, this is a beautifully rustic wooden church with no wall or ceiling paintings. The walls of the church are cast in the mysterious shadows of the congregation.
In the hallway, you can see a crutch and a beggar.
The church, situated in the middle of the forest, can also be reached by car.
Enquiries: Keuruu Museum.
Stories about the church have been recorded in, for example, the children’s picture book *Stories from the Pihlajavesi Wilde ess Church*, published by the Pihlajavesi Chapel Parish.
