Veterans' Park
Veterans' Park is located in the Old Keuruu area, on the strip of parkland between the Keuruu railway line and the Kamanan Tourist Centre.
About this place
During the Second World War, men from the Keuruu region fought mainly in Light Detachment 10/7 and Infantry Regiment 30/21, and during the Continuation War in Infantry Regiment 48 and several other units.
A commemorative plaque for the JR 30/21 and Light Unit 10/7, military units established in Keuruu, was unveiled on National Veterans’ Day in April 2003. It was affixed to the wall of the granary at the vicarage, located in the area between the railway station and the vicarage. The area has been named Veterans’ Park. The aim was to honour the war veterans of the Keuruu region.
30th Infantry Regiment
In the autumn of 1939, the 30th Infantry Regiment was formed from the Keuruu military district. From 1 January 1940, the regiment’s designation was JR 21. On 12 October 1939, a total of 2,955 men and 489 horses
with their carts were loaded onto five trains at Keuruu station. JR 30 was transported to the Karelian Isthmus, to the Taipale sector, where it fought honourably for the entire 105 days of the Winter War.
Battles took place at locations including the Taipaleenjoki River, Terenttilä, Koukunniemi and Kirvesmäki.
The regiment suffered heavy losses: approximately 550 men were killed or missing, and over 1,200 were wounded. In total, this amounted to around 60% of its original strength. The regiment’s darkest day was 7 December 1939, when 46 soldiers were killed. The company of Lieutenant Yrjö Jylhä Soini, a poet, lost 24 men killed in action at Koukunniemi on that day, with an equal number wounded.
But the front held.
