The Wilde ess Church at Pihlajavesi

The old church in Pihlajavesi, also known as the Wilde ess Church, is a wooden church built between 1780 and 1782. The church was designed by the renowned church architect Matti Åkerblom-Pä ä. It was built using the resources of ten houses and four crofts, some seventy years before the first road was built in the region. Originally, only a modest preaching hall was to be built at the junction of the forest paths, but enthusiasm led to the completion of a proper church without permission. The then vicar of Keuruu, Abraham Indrenius the Younger, received a reprimand from the cathedral chapter, and the matter was reported to the county gove or. However, the church was allowed to remain standing and served the hard-working people of the smoke-house villages.

    Haapamäki Church

The foundations of the church were laid in 1939 on ‘donated land’, where a modest chapel had stood since 1932. However, the war brought the chapel project to a halt, and the foundations were overgrown with bushes after the war. The final church, designed by architect Mikael Nordenswan, was completed between 1952 and 1953. Haapamäki Church is a long church with a steep roof and brick construction, and it is one of the first multi-purpose churches in Finland. Adjacent to the church hall are a parish hall and club rooms.
