Keuruu Co-educational School Rules and Regulations: Details and Clarifications

I’ll let everyone get on with their work

  • I focus on my own work and don’t comment on what others are doing -> self-regulation. My job is to concentrate on lea ing and to let others get on with their work in peace.
  • ‘Everyone’ refers to pupils, teachers and other staff, as well as other people.

I arrive on time for lessons and all school events

  • If I’m late, I’ll apologise and explain why.
  • I have the necessary materials for each lesson with me

When it is my tu to speak, I will do so politely and respectfully

  • I point, wait and speak once I have been given permission -> self-regulation

I listen to the instructions and follow them

  • I focus on the task at hand and act accordingly -> self-regulation
  • This way, I’m also giving others the chance to listen to the instructions

I take care of other people’s belongings and school property as well as my own

  • e.g. textbooks
  • If I notice any problems or shortcomings, I’ll let the teacher know

I think the school is tidy

  • I’ll put the rubbish in the bin

I behave calmly and appropriately during school hours and on trips outside school

  • Ball games may only be played in the designated areas

The use of electronic devices, such as mobile phones and music players, is permitted during break times and, with the teacher’s permission, for educational purposes. The teacher has the right to confiscate the device if necessary

  • When using electronic devices, please be considerate of others
  • I put my devices away on my own initiative at the start of the lesson.

I will leave my outdoor clothes on the coat hooks in the corridor during lessons, group activities and mealtimes

  • in the home economics and textiles workshops, outdoor footwear is also permitted

Vehicles must be parked in the designated areas during school hours.

  • The bikes are placed on the racks

Travelling by private vehicle is prohibited during school hours.

The following situations are exceptions to this rule:

  • If the school day begins or ends somewhere other than at the school, pupils are permitted to travel by their own means of transport during the school day. They must take the most direct and safest route, observing the rules of the road and taking traffic conditions into account. The teacher for that lesson will instruct the pupils on the route. This mainly applies to physical education, work experience and work-based lea ing periods in flexible basic education. The use of a bicycle helmet is strongly recommended.

We comply with Finnish law at our school. For this reason, for example

  • Bringing, using or possessing tobacco products at school is prohibited
  • The use, possession and appearance under the influence of drugs and alcohol are prohibited throughout the school grounds and at school events
  • A teacher has the right to confiscate any dangerous object or substance, as well as to inspect a pupil’s belongings, any school storage facilities under the pupil’s control, and the outside of their clothing
  • Pupils in primary and lower secondary education may only leave the school premises in exceptional circumstances and with special permission (for healthcare appointments or sports facilities)
  • A pupil exhibiting disruptive behaviour may be removed from the lesson: they may be placed under the supervision of another teacher or a school supervisor, or, if necessary, referred to the headteacher for a meeting
  • Damage gives rise to a liability to pay compensation
  • The school accepts no responsibility for vehicles brought onto the premises or for pupils’ personal belongings. Lockers are available at the school for the storage of valuables.

THE BOARD OF KEURUU SECONDARY SCHOOL AND UPPER SECONDARY SCHOOL

ADDENDUM TO THE RULES OF PROCEDURE OF THE CO-EDUCATIONAL SCHOOL 26 April 2022

The wearing of headwear in the canteen, the staff room, during home economics lessons, at school events and in other specifically designated situations is prohibited.

The wearing of headwear during lessons is permitted subject to certain conditions:

  • Headwear must not interfere with lea ing. The teacher or tutor will decide whether this is the case.
  • A hat or hood must not be used as a means of disguise; in other words, the teacher or instructor must be able to see who is wearing it. For example, by removing the headwear for a moment.

Wearing a hat indoors is still considered bad or inappropriate behaviour in some situations. Inappropriate behaviour can undermine your own prospects, which is why we lea how to behave appropriately in different situations.

The option to wear headgear indoors does not imply an obligation to do so.

ADDENDUM TO THE RULES OF PROCEDURE OF THE CO-EDUCATIONAL SCHOOL 20 May 2025

The Basic Education Act prohibits the use of mobile devices during lessons, except where used with the teacher’s permission for lea ing purposes, personal healthcare or as an assistive device. Mobile devices must be kept in a rucksack during lessons. If a rucksack is not available, they must be kept in a place designated by the teacher. Any breach of this rule will result in the mobile device being taken immediately to the headteacher or, in the headteacher’s absence, to the school office for the remainder of the day. Mobile devices may be used during the school day outside of lessons. School events are treated as equivalent to lessons in this context.

Keuruu Co-educational School is home to the City of Keuruu’s Flexible Basic Education (JOPO) group. The JOPO group’s classroom is located outside the Keuruu Upper Secondary School campus at Einari Vuorelantie 1.

JOPO is a programme based on the general education curriculum and timetable. It is intended for pupils in Years 8 and 9 who are interested in lea ing by doing, seeing and experiencing. In particular, the selection process for JOPO prioritises applicants who are at risk of not obtaining a comprehensive school leaving certificate or a place in further education after comprehensive school. When processing applications, emphasis is placed on the pupil’s and guardians’ commitment to the working methods of flexible basic education. It is particularly important that the applicant is willing and able to study actively whilst working.

Flexible basic education emphasises functional, out-of-classroom lea ing environments that support the pupil’s holistic growth and development. These include work placements, school camps/Nuotta training sessions, activity days, study trips, event organisation, company visits, educational trials, fairs, cultural events and pupils’ extracurricular activities. Inte ational activities are also part of the JOPO class’s programme.

In JOPO, pupils find meaning in their lea ing through experiences gained in real-life situations. When lea ing is taken to where it is needed, practice and theory come together naturally (P. Hänninen). At JOPO, strong personalisation is at the heart of the lea ing process. JOPO is therefore a great opportunity to invest in one’s own studies and agency, and through that, in the future.

Keuruu’s JOPO is participating in the inte ational Erasmus+ school engagement project. The project is known as ‘Engagement for Our Future’ (2024–2026). In addition to Keuruu’s JOPO, the project involves secondary schools from Paris in France, Berlin in Germany and Manlleu in Spain. The Department of Teacher Education at the University of Jyväskylä is also involved in this project. As part of the project, members of the JOPO group will have the opportunity to visit Spain, Germany and France, as well as to host an Erasmus+ camp in Finland.

The JOPO initiative also places particular emphasis on regional cooperation between the various JOPO groups in Central Finland.
